NEW UNPROTECT FOR LOTUS 1-2-3 (RELEASE 1A*)
From Gene Plantz
Chicago BBS 10-29-83
There is another version of Lotus 123 also called Release 1A
but with a different copy-protection technique. It can be
identified by an "*" that displays on the first screen under
the "s" in the word "Release"
Release 1A
*
To unprotect this version so it can be run on a hard disk
without requiring the SYSTEM DISK in drive A, do the following
1. RENAME 123.EXE 123.XYZ
2. DEBUG 123.XYZ
3. Type U AB8C press ENTER
You should see MOV CX,0002
if you don't, something is different and this won't work.
4. Type E AB8C C3 press ENTER
5. Type W
6. Type Q
7. RENAME 123.XYZ 123.EXE
That's it. It will now run from any drive. As always, this pat
is provided so that honest people don't have to suffer the
inconvienences imposed upon them by software manufacturers.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Users is a
consumer research project and information clearinghouse.
SPCU conducts surveys and interviews of PC users, and
does hands-on tests of IBM PC software. Our major focus
is word processing. We are currently studying thirty-two
different word processors and other writing tools for the
PC, such as spellcheckers and electronic file cabinets.
We are going to publish a newsletter called "Writing with
the PC." All SPCU members get it free. The are no
membership fees or dues. You can only join by sending us
your comments on your word processor including: why you
bought that one, how long it took to learn it, how fast
it is (e.g., cursor movement, deleting, inserting, block
moves, storing and retrieving files to and from disk),
what features it lacks that you need or wish it had, what
kind of documents you write with it, whether you would buy
it now or buy another word processor instead, along with
any other comments you might share with a friend who
was considering buying it. Also, send a stamped (two
stamps), self-addressed envelope so we can mail the first
newsletter to you.
We look forward to hearing from you.
